Frequently asked questions

How is PAYE calculated in Kenya? +

PAYE is charged on your taxable income (gross pay minus allowable deductions: NSSF, SHIF and the Housing Levy) using progressive tax bands of 10%, 25%, 30%, 32.5% and 35%. A personal relief of Ksh 2,400 per month is then subtracted from the tax due.

What is deducted from my gross salary? +

Typical statutory deductions are NSSF (6% of pensionable pay, capped at Ksh 4,320), SHIF (2.75% of gross, minimum Ksh 300), the Affordable Housing Levy (1.5% of gross) and PAYE income tax.

How much is NSSF in 2025? +

NSSF is 6% of pensionable pay up to an upper limit of Ksh 72,000, giving a maximum employee contribution of Ksh 4,320 per month.

What is SHIF and how much is it? +

SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund) replaced NHIF. It is 2.75% of your gross salary, subject to a minimum contribution of Ksh 300 per month.

Can I calculate gross salary from a target net pay? +

Yes. Switch to the “Net → Gross” tab and enter your desired take-home pay — the calculator works backwards to find the gross salary that produces it.
