Frequently asked questions
What is Kenya’s standard VAT rate? +
The standard rate used here is 16% of the VAT-exclusive amount. Parliament can change this — confirm against the latest KRA notice. Exempt and zero-rated supplies have 0% VAT and are not calculated in this tool.
What is the difference between Add VAT and Extract VAT? +
Add VAT: you have a net (ex-VAT) price and want the gross and the tax. Extract VAT: you have a VAT-inclusive total and want to split out the tax and the net.
How is VAT extracted from an inclusive price? +
Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). VAT = gross − net. At 16%, net = gross ÷ 1.16.
