Frequently asked questions
Who pays the M-Pesa send fee? +
The sender. The fee is taken from your M-Pesa on top of the amount you send, so the recipient gets the full amount in their wallet. Example: send Ksh 1,000 and the fee is Ksh 13 — you need Ksh 1,013, they receive Ksh 1,000.
How do agent withdrawals work? +
You ask for the cash amount you want. The agent gives you that cash in full, and the withdrawal fee is taken from your M-Pesa separately. To walk away with Ksh 1,000 you need Ksh 1,029 in your wallet (Ksh 1,000 + Ksh 29). Withdrawals of Ksh 1–49 are not available; the minimum is Ksh 50.
How much should I send so someone can withdraw cash? +
Tick “Send enough so they can withdraw this as cash”. We add the agent withdrawal fee to what you send, then add your send fee on top. That way they can collect the cash without needing extra balance.
Is Lipa na M-Pesa Buy Goods free for the customer? +
Usually yes — the published customer charge is Ksh 0 and the merchant pays. Authorised fuel stations are an exception: the customer pays, and those bands are not in this tool. Confirm at the pump. Consumer Paybill charges are also not on Safaricom’s consumer send/withdraw table, so they are not calculated here.
Are Pochi la Biashara charges the same as sending to M-Pesa? +
Not during the current promo (3 months from 1 August 2026): transfers of Ksh 2,500–250,000 are capped at Ksh 50. After the promo, confirm the live tariff on Safaricom’s charges page or *334#.
Do these fees include excise duty? +
Yes. Safaricom publishes customer charges with applicable taxes already included. Limits on this page: Ksh 250,000 per transaction, Ksh 500,000 max balance and daily limit. Tariffs change — this is not an official Safaricom tool.
