How a KPLC bill is built
The line you see as “units × rate” is only the energy charge. Kenya Power then adds FCC and FERFA (gazetted every month), an EPRA levy of Ksh 0.03/kWh, a REP levy of 5% of the energy charge, a small WRMA levy, and 16% VAT on energy + FCC + FERFA. Postpaid accounts add a Ksh 150 fixed charge; prepaid tokens skip it.
Bands (from 2025-07): lifeline ≤30 kWh at Ksh 12.23, ordinary 31–100 at Ksh 16.45, high consumption above 100 at Ksh 19.08. Your real band follows a 12-month average, so override it if your SMS says otherwise. Confirm pass-throughs on the EPRA gazette and Kenya Power.
Frequently asked questions
How does Kenya Power calculate my bill? +
Energy charge (units × your band rate) plus Fuel Cost Charge, FERFA, EPRA levy (Ksh 0.03/kWh), REP levy (5% of the energy charge), WRMA levy, and 16% VAT on energy + FCC + FERFA. Postpaid accounts add a Ksh 150 fixed charge. Prepaid tokens skip the fixed charge.
What are the current KPLC domestic tariffs? +
Lifeline (about 30 kWh/month or less): Ksh 12.23/kWh. Ordinary (about 31–100 kWh): Ksh 16.45/kWh. High consumption (above 100 kWh): Ksh 19.08/kWh. These energy rates have been in force since July 2025; the 2026/27 increase was shelved. FCC, FERFA and WRMA still change every month — paste them from your token SMS.
How much is 100 units of KPLC in Kenya? +
On the ordinary domestic band, 100 kWh prepaid is about Ksh 2,469 with October 2026 pass-throughs (FCC 3.22, FERFA 0.87). Postpaid adds the Ksh 150 fixed charge, about Ksh 2,619. Your token SMS will differ when FCC or FERFA move.
Is KPLC prepaid cheaper than postpaid? +
For the same units and band, prepaid usually costs Ksh 150 less because it skips the postpaid fixed charge. Energy, FCC, FERFA, levies and VAT are calculated the same way on both meters.
Why does Ksh 1,000 buy fewer tokens some months? +
Because FCC and FERFA move with fuel prices and the shilling. The base energy tariff stays put; only those pass-throughs (and a small WRMA levy) change. When they rise, the same cash buys fewer units.
Is my band based on this month’s units? +
Not exactly. Kenya Power reviews your 12-month average. This tool can guess a band from the units you type, or you can lock lifeline / ordinary / high to match the SMS after a token purchase.
