How Kenya T-bills are priced

You lend to the Government of Kenya for 91, 182 or 364 days. You buy at a discount and get face value back. Interest is the gap. 15% withholding tax on that interest is taken when you buy, so the cash that leaves your DhowCSD account is price + tax. For most resident individuals that WHT is final. Paste the latest accepted weighted-average rate from centralbank.go.ke.

Frequently asked questions

How does CBK price a Treasury bill? +

Price = face value ÷ (1 + accepted yield × days / 365). The discount is face minus price. That discount is your interest. Use the accepted weighted-average rate from the latest auction on centralbank.go.ke — the defaults here are a snapshot, not a live feed.

Is the 15% tax taken up front? +

Yes, for most investors. Withholding tax is 15% of the discount and is collected when you buy, so cash paid today is price + tax. At maturity you still receive only the face value. For many resident individuals this WHT is final. Pension schemes with an exemption certificate may pay 0%.

What is the difference between 91-, 182- and 364-day T-bills? +

All three are discount instruments sold at CBK auctions. Longer tenors usually quote a slightly higher accepted yield, but your cash is locked for longer. This calculator lets you switch tenor and paste the latest accepted rate.

How do I buy a Kenya Treasury bill? +

Open a CDSC / DhowCSD account, fund it, and bid in the weekly CBK auction — retail (non-competitive) bids commonly start at Ksh 50,000 in multiples of Ksh 50,000. Check that week’s notice on centralbank.go.ke for cut-off times.

What is the minimum T-bill investment in Kenya? +

Retail (non-competitive) bids through DhowCSD are commonly from Ksh 50,000, in multiples of Ksh 50,000, subject to CBK’s current auction notice. Competitive bids start much higher.
